Our youth department focuses on issues pertaining to pre-teens and teens as they approach the ages where peer pressure, the desire to try new things (whether good or bad), to conform to what society tells them is "the norm" and to break away from parental control become major forces in their lives. During both Sunday School and Wednesday night activities, the Bible is used as the main guide to help them through these confusing and exciting times. Also, our youth leaders choose exciting curriculum that challenges students to think for themselves about who God is and the part He plays in their decision making, and ultimately their lives.
Wednesday night classes begin at 6:00 pm with a thirty minute class and ends with a thirty minute period in which youth can interact on a more social level. They play volleyball or basketball, throw footballs or just sit and talk with each other. The goal is to get them to become comfortable talking and being with each other as Christian brothers and sisters.
Sunday classes are more formal with an hour devoted to Bible study and discussion.
Our youth also play a major part during Sunday service. They participate in communion and the passing of the offering plate, and often are the scripture readers. Some of our youth sing in the choir as well.
Service to our community and to our church is stressed to our youth and because of that, they have volunteered their time to help tear down and rebuild our newly acquired church building, volunteered several hours during Johnson City's Lights Spectacular festival to help run our annual Lights Spectacular 5K, work in the nursery when extra hands are needed and generally make themselves available for any other workday or event where their help may be needed.
Throughout the year, activities just for the youth are coordinated. Our teens have attended concerts and conferences and summer camps.
